The RN, NICU provides specialized, developmentally supportive nursing care to high-risk and critically ill newborns requiring intensive monitoring and advanced clinical interventions. This role conducts detailed neonatal assessments, evaluates subtle changes in patient condition, and delivers evidence-based care to stabilize and support fragile infants. Working collaboratively with neonatologists, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and interdisciplinary care team members, the RN helps coordinate treatment plans and deliver family-centered education.
As part of a highly skilled, team-oriented NICU environment, this position promotes safety, growth, and optimal outcomes for infants and their families through vigilant observation and compassionate communication.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform comprehensive assessments of newborns, including monitoring vital signs, respiratory status, feeding tolerance, and overall clinical stability.
Administer medications, manage IV access, support respiratory therapies, and implement specialized neonatal interventions as ordered.
Utilize neonatal monitoring equipment and respond promptly to alarms, changes in condition, or emergent situations.
Provide family-centered support by educating parents on infant care, developmental needs, and involvement in daily routines.
Document assessments, treatments, and communication accurately in the electronic health record to maintain continuity of care and regulatory compliance.
Collaborate with neonatologists, respiratory therapy, and other interdisciplinary partners to develop, evaluate, and adjust individualized care plans.
Licenses and Certifications
Required:
Current or temporary RN license in North Dakota or compact RN licensure.
BLS certification required within orientation period.
NRP certification required within orientation period.
Educational Requirements:
RN program as evidenced by licensure.
Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where Degree was received.
Experience Requirements:
Hospital experience is preferred, but not required.
1 year NICU experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:
The RN, NICU frequently stands and walks within the unit, bends to access incubators and equipment, and assists with positioning, feeding, and procedures for fragile infants. The role requires fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and the ability to handle small, delicate equipment safely. Adequate vision and hearing are essential for assessing subtle changes, interpreting monitors, and responding quickly in urgent neonatal situations.
Environmental Requirements:
This role is performed in a specialized neonatal intensive care environment with exposure to continuous alarms, incubator heat sources, bright lighting, and infection-control considerations. The RN may encounter bodily fluids, medication aerosols, and cleaning agents, requiring strict adherence to PPE and NICU-specific safety protocols. The environment demands sustained focus, rapid response to changes, and sensitive communication with families experiencing stress or uncertainty.
