Title I Reading Specialist/Coach, Grades K-5

Tutor individual or small groups of students using the Science of Reading understandings. Serve as a resource to teachers and support staff, providing staff development and coaching to improve reading instruction; coordinate building level literacy activities, K-5; gather and analyze achievement data for Title I reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction in reading strategies based on the science of reading to individual students or small groups of students.
  • Provide training for classroom teachers, special education teachers, and instructional aides in reading/literacy strategies and assessment measures.
  • Facilitate and implement a system of literacy groups within the school.
  • Coach individual teachers to increase or enhance their use of best practices in reading within the general education classrooms.
  • Collect, compile, and submit reports on pre/post achievement data for students participating in Title I remediation/intervention (RtI) activities.
  • Meet with other reading specialists/coaches on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in strengthening family and school ties by facilitating opportunities for parents and guardians to increase their understanding and knowledge of literacy skills and activities.
  • Follow other directives from the Principal, the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction and the Superintendent that serve to improve services to the students and patrons of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Current Indiana Elementary Teaching License.
  • Certified in LETRS, Orton Gillingham and/or Wilson Reading or currently enrolled in a certification program with plans to complete that training.
  • Experienced practitioner of phonemic awareness practices, i.e. LIPS, Fundations with a commitment to coach others in the implementation of these practices.
  • Three or more years of satisfactory classroom teaching experience.
  • Excellent communication skills-oral, written, and interpersonal.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Excellent work habits, attendance record and successfully complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
  • Shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Sensory Requirements:
Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination. All tasks require oral communications ability.

Environmental Factors:
Tasks are regularly performed without potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, odors, humidity, vibrations, traffic hazards, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however the noise level can vary depending upon daily activity, but will still remain within the acceptable noise level range.

Mental Effort:
Normal Concentration/intensity, which includes prolonged mental effort with limited opportunity for breaks.
