About the Opportunity for an Assistant Director of Human Resources:
• Join the City of Mishawaka’s HR team in a leadership role supporting city-wide personnel needs
• Contribute to employee relations, compliance, and benefits administration in a collaborative environment
• Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership while ensuring fair and consistent HR practices
Overview of the Assistant Director of Human Resources role:
• Perform duties of the HR Director in their absence, supervising HR staff and overseeing daily operations
• Manage recruitment processes including job postings, interviews, references, onboarding, and orientation
• Administer benefits programs, FMLA, workers’ compensation, and employee leave policies
• Support testing, onboarding, and new hire processing for public safety employees (Fire/EMS/Police)
• Assist with job descriptions, policy updates, health & wellness programs, and compliance reporting
• Provide HR guidance to employees and department heads on policies, procedures, and employment laws
Preferred Qualifications for the Assistant Director of Human Resources role:
• Associate’s degree in HR, Business, or Organizational Development required;
Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Previous professional HR experience required (municipal/government setting a plus)
• SHRM-CP certification or ability to obtain and maintain certification
• Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to handle sensitive matters diplomatically
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and support a diverse workforce
• Valid driver’s license with safe driving record; flexibility for occasional evenings, weekends, or travel
