CNC Machinist, Machine Operator, Manufacturing & Industrial Operations
5-Axis CNC Mill Machinist
This role focuses on setting up and operating a 5-axis CNC mill to produce precision components, primarily for aerospace applications. You will perform regular machine setups, run longer production cycles, and verify part quality using precision measuring tools to ensure tight tolerances are consistently maintained.
Responsibilities- Set up and operate a 5-axis CNC mill to produce precision parts according to work instructions and engineering drawings.
- Perform 2–3 machine setups per week, including tooling changes, fixture setup, and program verification, with an emphasis on longer production run times.
- Review and interpret blueprints and work instructions to determine machining processes, sequence of operations, and required tooling.
- Ensure the machine is properly set up at the start of each job, including verifying correct tooling, offsets, and work holding before running parts.
- Run production parts, monitor machine operation, and make necessary adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency throughout the job.
- Complete history cards and production documentation for each run, accurately recording measurements, inspection results, and job details.
- Use micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments to inspect parts and confirm that all dimensions meet specified tolerances.
- Maintain dimensional accuracy on parts, consistently holding tolerances of approximately +/- 0.001 inch and ensuring overall part quality.
- Conduct in-process inspections to verify that parts remain within tolerance, and adjust machine settings or tooling as needed to correct deviations.
- Work from daily work instructions, organizing tasks to ensure that assigned jobs are completed within the scheduled timeframe.
- Repeat setup and production processes for new jobs as runs are completed, ensuring smooth transitions between different parts and programs.
- Follow shop safety procedures, including proper use of safety glasses and adherence to safe machine operation practices.
- Keep the work area, machines, and tools clean and organized to support a safe, efficient, and high-quality machining environment.
- At least 2 years of CNC milling experience working with 4- to 5-axis mills.
- Demonstrated experience setting up CNC mill machinery, including tooling changes and work holding setup.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings accurately.
- Proven ability to hold dimensional accuracy of approximately +/- 0.001 inch on machined parts.
- Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers for part inspection.
- Hands-on experience operating CNC vertical mills and multi-axis milling equipment.
- Familiarity with performing changeovers and setups on CNC mills, including 5-axis machines.
- Experience working with tooling changes and adjusting machine parameters to maintain part quality.
- Capability to inspect parts and document results using shop documentation such as history cards.
- Comfort working with CNC control platforms commonly used on mills, such as Haas controls.
- Strong understanding of general machining practices and CNC milling processes.
Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience machining parts for the aerospace industry.
- Background working in a smaller machine shop environment.
- Experience using a variety of quality instruments beyond micrometers and calipers for inspection.
- Familiarity with vertical milling operations and multi-axis machining strategies.
- Ability to troubleshoot minor machining and setup issues to maintain consistent production.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precision components.
You will join a family-oriented organization that values a clean, safe, and well-organized work environment. The shop offers a stable daytime schedule, providing predictable hours and work-life balance. You will work in a climate-controlled facility producing high-precision parts, with the opportunity to deepen your expertise in multi-axis CNC machining and aerospace manufacturing. The culture emphasizes quality, craftsmanship, and long-term relationships with employees.
