Special Education Teacher

Job Description:

A special education teacher is responsible for providing instruction and support to students with disabilities or special needs. Their role involves creating and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs, abilities, and learning styles.

Responsibilities:
  • Developing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):
    Collaborate with parents, other teachers, school administrators, and specialists to develop IEPs that outline specific academic goals, accommodations, and modifications for students with disabilities.
  • Instructional Planning and Delivery:
    Plan and deliver appropriate instruction using a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to accommodate the diverse needs of students with disabilities. Adapt curriculum materials, resources, and assessments to meet individualized learning objectives.
  • Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    Conduct ongoing assessments to evaluate students' progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly. Use data to inform instructional decision-making and modify IEPs as needed.
  • Behavior Management:
    Implement positive behavior support strategies and techniques to promote a positive learning environment and address challenging behaviors effectively. Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to develop and implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) when necessary.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    Work collaboratively with general education teachers, support staff, therapists, and other professionals to ensure the integration of students with disabilities in the school community. Maintain open communication with parents to discuss students' progress, concerns, and educational goals.
  • Professional Development:
    Stay current with best practices, research, and trends in special education by participating in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences. Continuously seek to improve teaching practices and enhance knowledge of effective strategies for supporting students with disabilities.
  • Compliance and Documentation:
    Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations governing special education services, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of students' IEPs, assessments, progress reports, and other documentation required by law.
  • Inclusive Practices:
    Promote inclusion and equity by advocating for the rights and needs of students with disabilities within the school community. Foster a culture of acceptance, respect, and diversity that celebrates the strengths and contributions of all students.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in special education or a related field.
  • State certification or licensure as a special education teacher.
  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in educational settings.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and provide personalized support to meet individual student needs.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to advocating for students with disabilities.
