Position Summary

The Senior Project Engineer must possess and exercise Commitment, Initiative, Integrity and Teamwork in the execution of their duties. The Senior Project Engineer acts as liaison between our company’s construction managers and the project architect, consultants, subcontractors, project team and client, using good communication skills to process administrative work including RFI’s, submittals, shop drawings, claims and change orders.

Job Purpose

The primary function of a Senior Project Engineer is to assist the Project Manager and the Superintendent in organizing, controlling, scheduling, monitoring, and recording all activities which are part of the construction management of a project. This includes working to ensure construction is progressing as scheduled and contract specifications are adhered to and leading and directing the work of others. Demonstrate extensive knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the construction field.

This position reports directly to the Project Manager, Superintendent, and all other assigned supervisors.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor, develop and train team members for fast-paced growth.
  • Management of other project engineers on the project team.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication to act as the liaison between the owner/client, architect, consultants and general contractor project team.
  • Understand and enforce contracts between Cannon Building and subcontractors as well as Cannon Building and the owner.
  • Assist in the preparation of bid packages and subcontracts including development of drawing lists, scopes of work and schedules.
  • Employ project management systems to manage and control project documentation including change orders, subcontractor claims, purchase orders, submittals, and shop drawings. Keep organized files of all documents.
  • Handles a varied workload and multiple priorities while working as a team with coworkers to accomplish company and project goals
  • Monitor and prepare RFI logs, submittal logs, subcontractor status reports, testing / inspection reports, safety inspections and reports, change order logs and other related reports for use by the project manager and superintendent. Issue updated logs to the superintendent on a weekly basis.
  • Assist in the preparation, monitoring and updating of the project schedule. Help coordinate the schedules with the superintendent’s "3 week look ahead" schedules. Establish material delivery schedules/logs from the submittal logs and assist in their integration into the project schedule.
  • Write RFI’s and review RFIs for accuracy, references and detail including interpretation of drawings and specifications as it relates to the RFI. Keep record drawings updated and RFIs posted. Ensure that as-built drawings are kept up to date and in order.
  • Participate in project cost control. This includes maintaining internal records and working with subcontractors to make sure changes are getting paid.
  • Identify, review, assemble, negotiate, and distribute change orders to both the owner and subcontractors.
  • Participate in operations and safety meetings to help facilitate and enforce jobsite safety at all times.
  • Assist in preparing documents for project meetings, safety meetings and coordination meetings. Prepare meeting minutes and distribute them using the Project Management System.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly billings, processing of subcontractor billings and preparation of monthly cost reporting documents for use by the management team.
  • Prepare project close out documents including monitoring of punch list to completion, preparation of warranties and operations manuals.
  • Proficiency in basic estimating skills including quantity take offs, spreadsheet analysis, and unit pricing that can be utilized in the review of change order pricing.
Technical Skills
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, project management software (Procore or similar), scheduling software (MS Project or similar) and BIM software (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks or similar).
  • Ability to understand complex construction project scopes.
  • Team player with excellent listening and strong communication skills.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve complex issues.
  • A strong work ethic and a "can-do" attitude.
  • LEED, DBIA, PMP certifications and OSHA trainings a plus.
