Description:
The emergency department consists of 24 beds. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 1:4. There is a unit secretary available 21 hours per day. The core nursing staff includes five RNs working from 10:00 to 22:00. Equipment utilized in this unit includes a Level 1 fluid warmer, GE monitor system, Arctic Sun, Lifepak, and Alaris pumps. Documentation is conducted using a Meditech system.
Scheduling requires working every third weekend with shifts that may start as early as 10:00 and end as late as 01:30. Floating to other units is rare and would only occur if other staff members have been flexed home. Patient experience protocols include the use of AIDET and whiteboards, with an emphasis on maintaining a positive attitude and culture. Advanced skills required include knowledge of trauma care, STEMI care, stroke care, sepsis management, and triage.
All procedures associated with a Level 2 trauma center are performed within this unit. The dress code mandates cobalt blue tops and solid-colored black or cobalt blue pants, along with closed-toe shoes.
