The Progressive Care Unit cares for patients with moderate physiologic instability requiring support. Examples of conditions managed include COPD exacerbation, pneumonia, congestive heart failure, and patients with tracheostomies. Patients in this unit are hemodynamically stable and require cardiac and respiratory monitoring and management every 2-4 hours. The level of care provided is less intensive than that of the ICU, but more than what is typically found in Medical/Surgical Units.
This unit specializes in the care of cardiac and pulmonary patients. Nursing interventions include vital signs every 4 hours, continuous cardiac monitoring, and blood glucose monitoring every 4 hours. Neurological monitoring is conducted as needed. Oxygen therapy is provided, which includes nasal cannula, BIPAP/CPAP up to 80%, and Air Vo for low flow support. Unit staffing includes 2 Patient Care Technicians and 1 Unit Secretary.
The documentation system used is Meditech. Nurses are responsible for self-scheduling, which requires 3 weekend shifts within a 4-week schedule. There are no on-call requirements or mandatory floating policies. The focus is on nurse courtesy, respect, and teamwork in patient care. Dress code requires royal blue uniforms. Please refer to unit-specific policies and guidelines to understand standards of care and performance expectations.
