Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: 26-176 Multiple stars with Gaia astrometry
## 26-176 Multiple stars with Gaia astrometry
* Doctorat, 36 mois
* Temps plein
* Expérience : pas de préférence
* Maitrise, IEP, IUP, Bac+4
* Astronomy, Astrophysics Most stars do not live alone, but in multiple systems. Characterising stellar systems is therefore an essential step in our understanding of stellar formation. The Gaia space mission provides astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic data for nearly two billions stars. Its fourth catalogue (DR4), scheduled for December 2026, will for the first time provide epoch observations from all three instruments.

This will open up a new goldmine, particularly for the study of the multiplicity of stellar systems.

The Gaia DPAC consortium will also provide in this DR4 release the largest catalogue to date of non-single stars orbits, discovering unseen companions with masses from exoplanets to black holes. This thesis will use the BINARYS code (Leclerc et al. 2023) to combine the Gaia data with complementary data (in particular radial velocity curves and direct imaging) to confirm the exoplanets and black holes candidates and find new ones, in particular in triples systems.

In the process, we will also derive dynamical masses for a wide variety of stars, a critical input to stellar evolution models.

The scientific applications of such a work being huge, the student will be able to select the applications he/she finds the most attractive. He/She will work with colleagues from the IPAG teams working on exoplanets and on black holes as well as with Gaia DPAC consortium experts across Europe.

The student will gain the expertise in astrometric data handling. This expertise was won in Europe through the Hipparcos mission, with most experts now leaving in retirement, and is critically needed to complete the last Gaia catalogue (planned for end 2030) and to prepare the next generation of astrometric mission.=================For more Information about the topics and the co-financial partner (found by the lab!);
