I.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Diesel Mechanic conducts complex and difficult auto mechanic work including repair and maintenance of gas, diesel, fire apparatus and heavy equipment. Employee diagnoses, adjusts, re-aligns and/or repairs automobiles, trucks, fire apparatus equipment and all types of City vehicles, including diesel and/or gasoline powered on and off-road equipment with little to no assistance. Employee conducts complete mechanic work including preventive maintenance, proper documentation of work, maintenance and safeguard of working tools and equipment, maintenance of safe and clean working area and correct and utilization of proper maintenance and repair procedures.
Employee has daily contact with the public and other departments, which requires simple courtesies and exercise of tact and diplomacy. This position has no supervisory responsibilities over others.
Qualifications
II. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and 1 year of post specialized training from a Technical or Vocational Institute in Automotive Technology/Mechanics (with a minimum of 2 years of certificate in Diesel Mechanics).
• Technical or Vocational education may be waived or substituted with 4 years of proven work experience as a Diesel Mechanic.
• Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification; preferred. III. EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
• Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.
• Applicant must take and pass a drug, physical, and pre-placement screenings administered by the City of Mission doctor at the City's expense
• Applicant must have a current valid class "C" driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety with no more than two (2) moving traffic violations within the past two (2) years.
• Applicant must have a neat and professional appearance.
• Applicant must provide their own tools necessary to perform the daily preventive maintenance duties and responsibilities.
• Job requires 4 years previous work experience as a Diesel Mechanic.
• Position requires thorough technical and mechanical knowledge of all phases of both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment to perform the tasks as assigned in an effective and expedient manner.
• Applicant will be required to perform the specific diagnostic check, maintenance or repair task, or performance tests specified in National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA) 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus, current edition.
• Applicant shall meet the qualifications administered by the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission, Inc. (EVT) for Fire Apparatus Technician certification(s) appropriate for the system or components that are to be maintained, and hold current certification.
• Applicant shall meet the qualifications administered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) for Medium/Heavy Truck certification(s) appropriate for the system or component (Certifications T1 through T8), as demonstrated by current ASE certification or EVT (Fire Apparatus) certification.
• Applicant shall maintenance, repair, or performance testing of fire pumps, industrial supply pumps, or any component of the apparatus that is used in pump operations and shall have current EVT (Fire Apparatus) Master Level 3 certification and must be maintained during the term of employment.
• This position is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing.
