About you
We are seeking a dedicated, reliable, and driven freelance reporter to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate is available to work weekends and holidays and has a good grasp of what constitutes breaking and important news in Toronto and the GTA. The candidate will have excellent writing and editing skills, with a focus on both accuracy and speed.
This role requires someone who can work independently, manage responsibilities, solve last-minute challenges, and ensure the site is populated with breaking and other content on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays. If you are an excellent writer and reporter, we’d love to hear from you.
We are seeking an experienced freelance reporter to provide news coverage focused on Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and Southern Ontario. This opportunity is ideal for a self-directed journalist with strong news judgment, excellent reporting skills, and the ability to produce accurate, compelling stories under tight deadlines.
Assignments will primarily involve breaking news and developing stories occurring on weekends and statutory holidays. The successful contractor will independently identify newsworthy events, verify information through reliable sources, and deliver publish-ready content in accordance with agreed-upon editorial deadlines.
Scope of work
Research, write, and publish timely, accurate, and engaging news stories under tight deadlines.
Gather and verify information from official sources, including police, and other relevant authorities.
Monitor news developments, emergency incidents, municipal announcements, court proceedings, public meetings, and other events that may warrant coverage.
Cover a wide range of topics, including crime, politics, weather, traffic, lifestyle, culture, and community events.
Independently source story ideas, conduct research, write articles, and publish content.
Produce timely, accurate, balanced, and engaging news content that meets agreed-upon editorial standards.
Use Word Press to create, edit, and publish digital news content while adhering to editorial standards and best practices.
Qualifications
Minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience reporting and writing hard news for a news organization, with experience in digital journalism preferred.
Demonstrated experience producing digital news content in a fast-paced environment.
University degree or college diploma in journalism, communications, or a related field.
Experience writing, editing, and publishing content on digital news platforms and content management systems.
Experience writing a range of news content including crime, new business openings, local government, community news, and breaking news.
Strong fact-checking, and source verification skills.
Strong knowledge of Toronto, GTA, and Ontario, including ability to find stories, how to vet them and how to make them compelling.
Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
