Minimum Requirement for All Assistant Teachers

Assistant teachers must have:

• At least a high school diploma or a High School Equivalency Diploma, and
• Be able to demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing.

1. Assistant Teacher Requirements in Pre-Kindergarten

Approved Pathways (Choose One)

Option A

• Early Childhood Associate Degree

Option B

• Associate Degree or 60 college credit hours
  PLUS
• 12 early childhood college credit hours

Option C

• Completion of an approved early childhood training program

Examples include:

• Child Development Associate (CDA)

• National/State Director's Credential

• Montessori Credential

• MDE's specialized early childhood training

Option D

• High School Diploma or GED
  PLUS
• Work Keys scores (see below)
  PLUS
• 12 early childhood college credit hours

Option E

• High School Diploma or GED
  PLUS
• Work Keys scores
  PLUS
• Completion of an approved early childhood training program

Work Keys Requirements Before 2017:

• Reading for Information: score of 4
• Applied Mathematics: score of 4
• Writing or Business Writing: score of 3

Work Keys Requirements After 2017

• Must have Work Keys Silver Level Certification. The Workkeys Assessment Areas are as follows:
  • Workplace Documents: score of 4
  • Graphic Literacy: score of 4
  • Applied Math: score of 4
    • IMPORTANT NOTE - The three assessment areas above cannot be substituted for other tests.

Job Title:
Teacher Assistant

Job Purpose:
To help increase student achievement by assisting certified professional staff with students to meet instructional goals and objectives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
• Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
• Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
• Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
• Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
• Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
• Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Completion of 48 college hours from accredited college or university OR successful completion of Work-keys exam
