GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION

All Hinds Community College employees must commit to the Caring Campus approach to student engagement and daily apply these general behavioral objectives: listen to student questions and concerns with a positive attitude and make meaningful connections with students.

The SOAR Mentor is responsible for supporting participants in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund SOAR HBCU Scholars Program by providing guidance, supervision, encouragement, and leadership throughout the program. Mentors serve as positive role models and assist with student engagement, group activities, workshops, campus experiences, and program events. Mentors help create a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment that promotes academic success, leadership development, teamwork, and personal growth.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

* Strong commitment to working with student populations

* Ability to support high school students in academic and residential environments

* Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills

* Ability to enforce rules and maintain structure in a residential setting

* Ability to work evenings, weekends, and reside on campus during the program

* Ability to provide academic support and tutoring in every subject area

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

* College student with at least 30 semester hours completed

* Minimum grade point average of 3.0 or above

* Experience working with youth or in educational settings preferred

* Experience in tutoring, mentoring, or residential life support is highly desirable

* Hinds Alumni preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

* Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.

* Will be responsible for participants in the residential halls.

* Will provide daily meetings with residential group at the beginning of the day to set goals/objectives for the day and at the end of the day to assess the goals/objectives of the day.

* Will assist facilitators during workshop sessions.

* Will provide intervention/tutoring to struggling participants.

* Will supervise and support students during evening and weekend residential activities.

* Will assist with planning and implementing structured enrichment and recreational activities.

* Will monitor student behavior and ensure compliance with program rules, policies, and expectations.

* Will respond appropriately to student needs, concerns, and emergencies.

* Will maintain accurate documentation as required by program guidelines.

* All other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Will supervise participants during their residential stay and during summer activities.

* Responsible for ensuring student safety, accountability, and appropriate behavior in residential and program settings.

* Will provide guidance and support to assigned student groups under the direction of program staff.
