TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 180 Day Schedule
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations & Building Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 24 years of age and have at least three (3) years of law enforcement experience prior to assignment.
- An officer, commissioned by a local law enforcement agency or school district, who has at least three (3) years of full time commissioned law enforcement service and graduate of the Basic Law Enforcement Officer Training Program and the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) School Resource Officer Basic Course.
- High school diploma;
College preferred, but not mandatory. - CPR Certified
PRIMARY GOAL:
The School Resource Officer supports and facilitates the educational process within the Wilkinson County Public School System by providing a safe and secure environment through building and establishing meaningful relationships with students and staff and proactively interacting with the school community to ensure the enforcement of city and state laws, preservation of public order, protection of life and the prevention, detection, or investigation of crime.
The SRO will work effectively with students, parents, school personnel and community agencies to support teaching and learning in the schools and to attain related goals and objectives of the school district as set by the Board of Trustees.
The School Resource Officer will patrol district property to protect students, staff and visitors from physical harm and prevent loss to district property resulting from criminal activity.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide law enforcement and police services to the school, school grounds and areas adjacent to the school.Investigate allegations of criminal incidents per police department policies and procedures. Enforce state and local laws and ordinances.Remand students who commit lesser offences to the principal or assistant principal.Work to prevent juvenile delinquency through close contact and positive relationships with students. In addition, the SRO shall give assembly presentations on school safety, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying and online safety to deter criminal or delinquent activities.The SRO should monitor crime statistics and communicate with surrounding Law enforcement for situational awareness prevention strategies that may provide safety and security for schools.Establish and maintain a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment.Assist school officials with their efforts to enforce Board of Education policies and procedures and maintain compliance with MS Department of Education with required drills.Conduct physical searches with the assistance of building administrators as prescribed by local school district policy. (REFER to Wilkinson County School District Policy JCDS: School Searches).Assist school administrators in emergency crisis planning and building security matters.Provide a course of training for school personnel in handling crisis situations, which may arise at the school.Be visible within the school community.Provide security for school-sponsored activities including travel in assigned school safety vehicle. (May be subject to revised schedule for travel as dictated by supervisor).Build working relationships with the school's staff as well as with student and parent groups.Work closely with assigned school personnel in designing and presenting law-related topics and the role of police in our society.Assist in conflict resolution efforts.Maintain the highest level of confidentiality as it pertains to students and staff to ensure that treatment is fair and equal.Crisis intervention for youth.Serve as hall monitor, truancy enforcers, crossing guards if needed.And other duties as assigned.#J-18808-Ljbffr
