Position Title
Mentor/Residential Assistant
OverviewThe SOAR Mentor supports participants in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund SOAR HBCU Scholars Program, providing guidance, supervision, encouragement, and leadership throughout the program. Mentors act as positive role models, help create a safe and supportive environment, and facilitate academic success, leadership development, teamwork, and personal growth.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.
- Supervise participants in residential halls and during summer activities.
- Conduct daily meetings with residential groups to set and review goals.
- Assist facilitators during workshop sessions and provide intervention/tutoring to struggling participants.
- Support students during evening and weekend residential activities and plan enrichment and recreational activities.
- Monitor student behavior, enforce program rules, policies, and expectations.
- Respond appropriately to student needs, concerns, and emergencies.
- Maintain accurate documentation as required by program guidelines.
- College student with at least 30 semester hours completed.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Strong commitment to working with student populations.
- Ability to support high school students in academic and residential environments.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to enforce rules and maintain structure in a residential setting.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and reside on campus during the program.
- Ability to provide academic support and tutoring in every subject area.
- Experience working with youth or in educational settings preferred.
- Experience in tutoring, mentoring, or residential life support is highly desirable.
- Hinds College alumni preferred.
Employee is regularly required to use hand to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, sit; occasionally required to stand, walk, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work EnvironmentTypical work environment is moderate noise level. Employee is occasionally required to perform job responsibilities outdoors and off site.
