Job Description

TITLE: TEACHER

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB GOALS: To create a flexible education program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each pupil’s ability; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teachers district-approved curriculum.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or groups involved.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals in harmony with the district’s philosophy on education; establishes clear objectives for all lesson units, projects, and the like, to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Translates lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom. Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth; keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports and report cards as scheduled by the school district.
  • Identifies pupil needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual education plans.
  • Obtains and uses information about the needs and progress of individual learners and about the effectiveness of instruction, revising it when necessary.
  • Counsels students when problems arise and adjustments are needed.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Accepts a share of responsibility for co‑curricular and extracurricular activities as assigned across the school district.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Communicates regularly with parents outside of the normal classroom day by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, electronic media, etc.
  • Is available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings, PTA meetings, in‑service and/or staff development when scheduled by Principal, special services, and central office.
  • Creates an environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers, and exhibits of student work.
  • Plans and coordinates the work of assistant teacher if assigned, parents, and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips.
  • Supervises student teacher if assigned and gives sound advice and suggestions to help them become successful teachers.
  • Closely supervises pupils on playground when applicable.
  • Supervises pupils to and from auditorium and during programs when directed by principal to do so.
  • Supervises pupils in hallway during the change of classes when applicable.
  • Becomes knowledgeable of district’s evaluation instrument and utilizes the descriptions and indicators in an attempt to become a district master teacher.
  • Assumes the responsibility of keeping his/her teaching certificate current and valid.
  • Displays pride and loyalty to self, school, and district.
  • The effective teacher dresses appropriately as a professional educator to model success.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises classroom, students, volunteer, and assistant teachers where applicable.
