Job Description

TITLE: Teacher

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB GOAL: To provide 21st century instruction that helps students master subject matter and skills in order to produce civically responsible students that are college and career ready

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Student safety, learning, and well-being

Mandatory Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Educator License issued by the Mississippi Department of Education with Elementary Education endorsement
  • The ability and performance of each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily
  • Adherence to policies, procedures, and guidelines set forth by the Hazlehurst City School District, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), and other specified agencies
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach assigned classes according to curriculum as mandated by the Mississippi Department of Education
  • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with state/district testing programs
  • Consistently assess student achievement through formal and informal testing
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned
  • Assist the administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with parents and students
  • Keep classes in session for the full scheduled time, providing instruction and actively monitor students
  • Supervise students in out of classroom activities during the day and on all field lessons
  • Set aside sufficient time for lesson planning, conferences, guidance, and tutorial assistance
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely records of attendance, grades, and other reports as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees
  • Participate in staff development activities, professional associations, presentations, publications, applied educational research, consulting, evaluations, and similar activities which enhance the individual and the education profession
  • Presents a positive role model for students that support the mission of the school
  • Use teaching techniques that include the effective utilization of resources that motivate students to achieve their potential
  • Use a variety of instruction strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, cooperative learning, lecture, discovery, etc.
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly
  • Use technologies in the teaching/learning process
  • Assume responsibility for inventory, care, and maintenance of instructional equipment and supplies
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and may sponsor outside activities approved by the school administrator
  • Present a personal appearance in keeping with contemporary community standards for a professional person
  • Maintain current credentials and certifications as required in respective field
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate authority.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year as established by the Hazlehurst City Board of Education

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with policies, procedures, and guidelines set forth by the Hazlehurst City School District, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), and other specified agencies
