MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) Instructional Assistant

Reports To

Principal and/or MTSS Coordinator

Job Summary

The MTSS Instructional Assistant supports the implementation of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports by providing targeted academic and behavioral interventions to students. Working under the direction of certified teachers, interventionists, and school administrators, the assistant helps identify student needs, delivers small-group and one-on-one instruction, monitors student progress, and promotes a positive learning environment that supports student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide supplemental academic instruction and interventions to individual students and small groups in reading, mathematics, and other core subject areas.
  • Assist with the implementation of Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions as outlined in students' MTSS plans.
  • Support positive behavior interventions and strategies consistent with the school's MTSS framework.
  • Collect, record, and maintain accurate student progress monitoring data.
  • Assist teachers with screening assessments, data collection, and documentation.
  • Reinforce classroom instruction through guided practice and individualized support.
  • Collaborate with teachers, interventionists, counselors, and administrators to support student achievement.
  • Prepare instructional materials and organize intervention resources.
  • Monitor student engagement, attendance, and behavior during intervention sessions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with district policies and federal regulations.
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Attend MTSS meetings, professional development, and training as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or MTSS coordinator.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree or completion of college coursework preferred.
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of MTSS, Response to Intervention (RTI), or evidence-based instructional practices is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse learners.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and use educational technology for documentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a school team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of basic instructional strategies in literacy and mathematics.
  • Ability to implement intervention plans with fidelity.
  • Strong observation and data collection skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Patience, flexibility, and professionalism.
  • Commitment to supporting student academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift instructional materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and other school settings.
  • Ability to use computers and standard office equipment.
  • School-based environment with regular interaction with students, teachers, administrators, and families.
  • May involve supporting students in classrooms, intervention rooms, and other instructional settings.
  • Work schedule follows the school district calendar.
