Educational Interpreter

Reports to:

Principal, Director or Assistant Director of Special Education

Receives Guidance From:
Teacher

Job Purpose:

To interpret/translate spoken language using American Sign Language and vice versa, to facilitate communication between deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing students and teachers; and perform related work as required.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interpret classroom, administrative, and social interactions as appropriate for students and staff
  • Provide voice to sign (expressive) and sign to voice (receptive) interpreting which may include a form of American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Use the appropriate sign system for each student
  • Continuously model correct interpreter/student roles
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with parent, coworkers, and administrative staff
  • Attend IEP meeting for all assigned students; serve as a resource to parents, deaf education teachers and speech pathologists
  • Assist in an advisory capacity to teachers, parents and students whose communication is determined to be sign language; adapt curriculum to compensate for ASL delivery
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Regular, timely/dependable, in person attendance is an essential function of this position
  • Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy, state, or federal guidelines
  • Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, GAB, all other district, state, and federal policies, and procedures as established by Lamar County School District and the Mississippi Educator Code of Ethics
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED;
Must complete MS Interpreter Registration and hold a MS Quality Assessment Screening Card as suggested by the Mississippi Department of Education.

Work Environment

The work environment is not a standard office setting; but rather encompasses the entire active school campus both inside and outside the facilities. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate and occasionally high.
