Emergency Management is a comprehensive approach for administering and governing efforts in mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Works an assigned day and/or night shift to ensure 24-hour operations coverage operating telephone, radio, and other equipment.
  • Assists higher ranking emergency management officials assigned to a designated area of the statewide emergency management program.
  • Maintains knowledge of procedures and protocol involving both in‑state and out‑of‑state emergency management systems, criminal justice and law‑enforcement entities, and inter‑agency fire management systems.
  • Gathers and analyzes information and interprets findings, prepares documentation for management decision and approval on matters such as operational decision‑making process, interagency and intra‑agency coordination, situation reports, special operational briefings, updates, and incident action plans.
  • Receives incoming calls, obtains the nature of the call and pertinent information, conducts alert and informational notification, and coordinates with appropriate personnel to facilitate response efforts.
  • Determines the exact location of the emergency or incident and provides situational awareness to the appropriate response personnel to coordinate safe mobilization.
  • Monitors the National Weather Service and/or National Warning System and passes information and/or alerts on to the proper persons when emergency weather or other emergencies arise.
  • Provides technical assistance to state officials, county officials, and emergency personnel in preparing and implementing state and local emergency plans.
  • Prepares and updates training manuals, standard operating procedures, briefing, presentations, and checklists related to the assigned position.
  • Assists in the conduct of emergency management program training for disaster reservists and augmentees, participates in workshops, conferences, and exercises in areas delegated.
  • Assists in conducting special studies for the organization, planning, and evaluating various phases of emergency management programs.
  • Conducts meetings as necessary to keep stakeholders informed of procedures, guidelines, required documentation, and requirements.
  • Assists in the coordination and management of response and recovery activities, including initiation and coordination of mission planning, intelligence gathering, reporting, and data management.
