This is an in-office position only.

This is a Peer Counselor (PC) position in the Citrus County Health Department Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) office. This position utilizes personal experience and empathy to support and counsel new mothers who are breast-feeding their babies.

• Time sheet and EAR entry within the required time frame
• Subject to emergency duty in the event of a natural disaster
• Completion of all mandatory or assigned trainings within the required time frame
• Promote the Florida Department of Health in Citrus County in its mission to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, and community efforts and its vision to be the healthiest state in the nation. Incorporate the agency values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness and Excellence in all aspects of work
• Have computer access to HMS. Adhere to Confidentiality and Security policies and procedures
• Must have a valid Driver’s license
• Provide breastfeeding support services for Citrus County Health Department WIC and Nutrition Program
• Provide breastfeeding support counseling in WIC clinics and by telephone contact
• Be available outside usual 8 to 5 working hours to provide information and support to mothers with breastfeeding questions or problems
• Attend all required WIC Health Department breastfeeding program meetings and inservice training as assigned
• Secure designated information sets for protecting confidentiality, data integrity, and appropriate access for all information stored in hard copy or electronic formats
• Refer breastfeeding clients to other public assistance programs per Health Department /WIC guidelines
• Maintain and update breastfeeding client files
• Record and report accurate data on all client contacts per WIC policy
• Provide follow-up service and documentation on all referrals

• Ability to manage time and communicate effectively to team members and maintain 100% confidentiality
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
• Ability to plan and evaluate services provided
• Knowledge of community resources
• Ability to work independently without direct supervision
• Must have breast-fed a child within the past five years

• Valid driver’s license
