Job Title

Emergency Medical Technician/Firefighter

Essential Job Functions
  • Applies basic life support skills to triage, rescue, treat and transport injured or ill persons
  • Responds to medical emergencies
  • Provides patient care functions
  • Directs medical activities at multiple patient scenes or mass casualty incidents until relieved by qualified supervisor; performs triage, coordinates medical transportation of the sick and injured
  • Protects property from water and smoke
  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls
  • Leads out hose line, selects and operates hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire
  • Other related duties, as assigned
Qualifications

Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience

One (1) year experience as an EMT Basic

Licenses/Certifications

Licensed Emergency Medical Technician

Licensed Firefighter

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the appropriate scope of care as defined by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, and Alcorn State University EMS policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of stress response and methods to ensure personal wellbeing
  • Knowledge of body substance isolation
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal, written and interpersonal
  • Ability to effectively deal with trauma and serious illness in emergency situations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment

    Ability to anticipate/identify problems, taking initiative to prevent/correct them
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel
  • Ability to operate specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed, in accordance with federal, state and local law, regulations and standards
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to handle telephone communications professionally and efficiently with careful regard to the divulgence of information
