Licensed Practical Nurse
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties. This includes executing physician orders, operating pill call, and managing sick call. Additionally, the Licensed Practical Nurse assists the physician in examinations and treatments. They perform technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their license. The Nurse applies appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. Responsibilities include attending sick call with the physician.
They prepare a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepare the examining room and equipment. The Nurse operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies. They control medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment, ensuring proper inventory management. Emergency procedures are performed as needed. Equipment and work areas must be kept clean, utilizing appropriate sanitation methods.
Documentation and reporting activities must follow established policies, including medical file documentation. The Nurse assists in evaluating the provision of all medical services to prevent duplication. Confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. Observations and recordings of inmate/resident behavior are essential. The medical unit should be inspected for items that could be used as contraband. The Nurse securely stores or disposes of supplies and equipment as necessary.
They assist with preparing and maintaining various records, reports, and logs, using appropriate grammar. Reading and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal documents is required. The Nurse may respond to lawsuits via corporate counsel and attend court hearings as necessary. Communication with administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors, and the public must be effective and coherent. Evaluating and recommending physical safety requirements is essential for a safe working environment.
The Nurse facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and appropriate medical services. They help prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies. Coordination of movement for inmates/residents to and from medical treatment areas is part of the role. Investigations and inquiries must be initiated and completed with accuracy as directed. The Nurse exercises independent judgment in determining when disciplinary action is appropriate.
They engage in functions in confined areas, including working rotating shifts. Verbal abuse may be present due to the hostile views of inmates/residents and others encountered.
