Licensed Practical Nurse
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for performing basic nursing duties. Responsibilities include execution of physician orders and operating pill call. Assisting the physician in examinations and treatments is essential. The nurse performs technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their license. This role involves the care and treatment of inmates/residents in a correctional setting. Key responsibilities include attending sick call with the physician.
The nurse prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepares the examining room and equipment. Medication dispensing and documentation must follow applicable policies and procedures. Control of medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment is required. Emergency procedures may need to be performed as needed. Tasks also include keeping equipment and work areas clean with appropriate sanitation methods.
Documentation and reporting of activities must be in accordance with established policies and procedures. The nurse assists in evaluating the provision of all medical services. Maintaining the security and confidentiality of all medical records is crucial. Observation and recording of inmate/resident behavior are required. Inspecting for contraband in the medical unit is essential. Records and reports must be prepared and maintained accurately.
Reading, comprehending, and interpreting medical documents is a key part of the job. The nurse may respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings when necessary. Effective communication with administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors, and the public is necessary. The nurse helps evaluate physical safety requirements to ensure a safe working environment. Facilitating accreditation of the medical program may be required. Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports are part of responsibilities.
The nurse may need to escort inmates/residents for medical treatment. Investigations and inquiries may be initiated as directed, gathering information and evidence. Engagement in functions within confined areas, including checking security of doors and windows, is expected. The nurse must be aware of potential verbal abuse in the work environment. This position requires open availability according to scheduling policies.
