Broadcast Network Technician II
Mississippi Public Broadcasting is seeking a Broadcast Network Technician II for the agency's Central Mississippi transmitter sites. This person is primarily responsible for maintaining tall towers, supervising rigging crews and operating tower lighting systems. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter with strong broadcasting knowledge.
Responsibilities:
- Undertaking performance testing and diagnostic measurements on feed lines and antennas. Conducting repairs and maintenance as required on tower mounted transmission equipment and associated pressurization systems.
- Operating power generation, electrical transfer, and voltage regulation equipment. Supervising generator and electrical maintenance contracts, mechanics, support personnel and fuel service vendors.
- Managing yard maintenance contracts, fence line and guy alley brush cutting and timber clearing, maintaining road and site accessibility, fences and property security.
- Provide building maintenance and support, engage contractors to undertake repairs as required. Manage scheduled HVAC maintenance and repair services.
- Operate and maintain Television and Radio transmitters in accordance with FCC Rules and Procedures as well as associated program chain equipment. Conduct routine performance testing, compliance, monitoring, and system operation testing. Carry out repairs, routine maintenance, and cleaning. Undertake meter readings and site logging requirements.
- Support the microwave and fiber MPLS program delivery systems for Television and Radio. Undertake repairs, conduct routine maintenance, and function tests to validate operation and performance.
- Maintain EAS encoding systems, associated monitor receivers and antenna systems. Perform required EAS log and records keeping.
- Support Television and Radio processing and encoding systems located on site. Perform maintenance, updates, configurations, and scheduled performance tests. Advise on equipment and technology upgrades, take an active role in system designs and equipment installations as well as building upgrades and renovations. Must assist with the repair and maintenance of the South Mississippi microwave sites.
What you'll need to be successful:
- Practical knowledge of Radio Frequency engineering as well as experience supporting transmission equipment, coaxial feed lines, and antenna arrays.
- The ability to maintain and support site infrastructure systems such as power generation and fuel storage equipment, towers, and air-conditioning plants.
- A knowledge of audio and video encoding, program, monitoring, and test equipment.
- Basic IT networking skills.
- Be available after hours, during natural disasters and emergencies, to provide critical repair, restoration, and recovery support.
- Ability to stay up to date on FCC Policy and Technical Operating Conditions for the MPB licenses they support.
- Requires knowledge of Process Logic Control (PLC) based remote control and monitoring systems is required.
- Project Management and contractor supervisory skills are essential.
- A practical knowledge and experience in Radio Frequency (RF) fundamentals, high voltage electrical, digital audio and video electronics is required.
- Knowledge of IT, switches, and wide area networks would be beneficial.
- Clean driving record and the ability to operate heavy pickup trucks off road in four-wheel drive.
- Be physically capable of lifting 50lb, climb ladders, and feel comfortable at heights.
- Must be willing to travel statewide on assignment. Must be regionally located in the south of the state, and will office out of either the McHenry or Bude, broadcast tower locations for primary work responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Typically requires completion of an apprenticeship program in the trade area or 4-6 years of on-the-job training in the trade area.
- Agency preferred qualifications:
Associate level qualifications in electronics, radio, or television. Society of Broadcast Engineers trade certification. Experience in maintaining and installing high-power radio frequency transmission equipment. The experience can be in Radio or Television Broadcast transmission as well as Military or Maritime communications.
