Alliance Resource Group is partnering with a growing commercial general contractor in Missoula, Montana to identify a Controller who will lead the day-to‑day accounting function and serve as a key financial partner to the CFO and operational leadership. This is an opportunity to join an established, approximately $120M commercial construction organization with a diverse project portfolio and continued growth ahead. The accounting department is experienced and operates with a high degree of autonomy.
The Controller will not be expected to personally process every transaction. Instead, this individual will provide leadership, review and final quality control across the accounting function while maintaining the technical depth to step into the details when necessary. For someone coming from public accounting, construction accounting, or a strong middle‑market environment who wants meaningful responsibility without sacrificing work/life harmony, this represents a compelling next step.
- Oversee the accounting department across general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job costing and related accounting functions.
- Lead and review the monthly and year‑end close process, ensuring financial information is accurate, complete and timely.
- Prepare financial statements and reporting packages for review with the CFO and executive leadership.
- Review account reconciliations and provide final quality control across key areas of the accounting function.
- Oversee work‑in‑progress schedules, job costing and project financial reporting.
- Partner with project teams to review project budgets, costs incurred, estimated costs to complete and projected margins.
- Review project budget adjustments and ensure changes are appropriately reflected within financial reporting.
- Review subcontractor payments and related supporting documentation.
- Maintain strong internal controls and identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting and workflow.
- Serve as a resource to accounting staff and project teams when complex accounting or project‑related questions arise.
- Lead, mentor and hold the accounting team accountable while allowing experienced team members the autonomy to manage their respective areas.
- Assist the CFO with technical accounting matters, external audits, tax‑related matters and other financial initiatives as needed.
Important distinction:
The CFO owns the primary forecasting, budgeting and broader financial strategy responsibilities. The Controller's focus is ensuring the underlying accounting, project financials and reporting are accurate, timely and dependable.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline.
- Approximately 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- 4–5 years of public accounting experience is highly preferred, particularly for someone ready to transition into an operating company environment.
- CPA or CPA-track background is a plus.
- Experience overseeing or reviewing the work of an accounting team.
- Strong understanding of financial statement preparation, reconciliations and month‑end close.
- Ability to review work at a high level while remaining comfortable getting into the weeds when an issue requires investigation.
- Construction accounting experience is preferred, particularly exposure to WIP, job costing, project budgets and subcontractor accounting.
- Experience with Sage 300 and/or Procore is highly desirable.
- Strong Excel and general accounting systems proficiency.
