The Opportunity
Tetra Tech invites you to consider a rewarding opportunity within our geotechnical engineering operations as a Senior to Principal‑Level Geotechnical Engineer. You can work from our Billings, Helena, or Missoula, MT offices, or from our locations in Colorado or Phoenix, AZ. Our Montana Geotechnical Group works closely with government agencies, consulting engineering firms, and architects across Montana, Colorado, and the surrounding region.
Project assignments allow you to work and travel within the spectacular Rocky Mountain region and across the United States on diverse client projects, including infrastructure, environmental hazard sites, mining, and oil and gas.
- Geologic hazard studies and mitigation
- Soil and rock slope stability analyses
- Waste containment design
- Horizontal directional drill (HDD) design
- Shallow and deep foundation design
- Bridge and highway corridor design
- Pavement section design
- Field instrumentation and monitoring
- Deep foundation load testing
- Construction oversight and materials inspection
- BS in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical/Materials emphasis, or related Geological Engineering degree.
- Ten to twenty years or more of experience in geotechnical engineering.
- PE license in MT, CO, or AZ or ability to obtain through reciprocity.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and other Microsoft software.
- Experience preparing engineering plans and specifications packages for public and private projects.
- Ability to perform geotechnical design analysis, calculations, and use current geotechnical design software.
- Familiarity with geotechnical lab testing and construction materials testing.
- Excellent writing and speaking skills, comfortable with client communications.
- Strong business development track record.
- Pre‑employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Master of Science or PhD in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical/Materials emphasis, or related Geological Engineering degree.
- HAZWOPER and MSHA certification.
- Provide leadership to sustain and facilitate growth of our geotechnical engineering practice and client accounts in Montana across the western United States.
- Manage projects and staff through all stages of the project life cycle in the delivery of geotechnical field investigation and design services.
- Direct assistance in growth of the geotechnical group regionally and business development of key client accounts.
- Perform geotechnical analysis and prepare final engineering reports.
- Perform geotechnical quality control inspection and documentation on construction projects.
- Professionally interact with clients.
- Strictly adhere to and promote company health and safety standards and expectations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 50 lbs in variable weather and terrain.
- Ability to travel and perform field oversight.
- Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground and steep slopes, in all weather conditions for up to 10–14 day work stints (extreme hot/cold temperatures, loud noises, heavy equipment, etc.).
- Office work will consist of time sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment.
- This position is based out of Billings, Helena, or Missoula, MT (preferred), with Lakewood, CO and Phoenix, AZ as secondary locations, and will have office and field responsibilities. The arrangement may be hybrid and must be reviewed with the supervisor; the candidate must reside within 50 miles of the local office.
- Field work will include work to be performed outside, in various environmental factors such as weather, altitude, terrain, noise, etc. This may include remaining stationary for long periods, walking, bending, lifting, and sitting for site assessments, sampling, oversight, and other field activities.
