Job Title: Patient Sitter

Schedule: Evening Shift

Reports to: Director of Emergency Department

• Observe patient and maintain a safe environment; must always have continuous and unobstructed view.
• May not adjust or remove restraints; notify nurse immediately if patient complains of discomfort.
• Accompany patient for any test or procedure off the unit; accompany surgical patients to the Holding Area.
• Remain within arm's length of the patient until relieved by the RN.
• Attempt to prevent the patient from pulling out lines / tubes.
• Attempt to prevent the patient from getting out of bed if a bed rest order is in place.
• Assist patient to the bathroom if activity level permits and RN approves; keep the bathroom door open and maintain direct view of the patient.
• At the discretion of the nurse, may assist with ambulation and feeding; help patient obtain fluids, consume meals, wipe face, etc.
• Read to patient, play a board game or cards, turn on TV, and engage in general conversation.
• Patient requests for assistance are referred to the nursing staff via call bell system.
• Always protect the patient's dignity and privacy by keeping the patient covered and the room door closed.
• May not make or receive personal phone calls while on duty; use a personal cell phone only in an emergency; may not leave until relieved.
• May read material while on duty, but only when the patient is asleep.
• Will be relieved for breaks and meals but may not leave until physically relieved by another staff member.

• High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent experience).
• Must be physically able to sit, stand, bend, brace and lift as needed.
• Clear communication, listening and observation skills.
• Calm, confident manner and ability to remain composed during escalation or high stress.
• Maintain composure with distressed or combative patients.
• Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
• Current Montana CNA certification with listing on the Montana Board of Nursing Nurse Aide Registry.
• Current American Heart Association BLS certificate (or obtain within 90 days after hire date).
• Every third weekend and one major winter and summer holiday is required.
• Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, eating, and ambulation.
• Report abnormal findings or changes in conditions to nursing staff.
• Assist with keeping patient rooms and common areas stocked, clean, and orderly.

• Basic Life Support (BLS).
