Overview
Controller – Construction Industry
Location: Sonoma County, CA
Compensation: $120,000–$145,000 DOE
A well-established construction company in Sonoma County is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations. This role is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader with strong construction industry experience who enjoys partnering with ownership and operations to support accurate reporting, compliance, and strategic decision-making.
Responsibilities- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including AP/AR, payroll, job costing, general ledger, and month-end close
- Manage financial reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Lead job cost accounting, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and cost variance analysis
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements
- Manage cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning
- Coordinate with external partners including CPA firm, auditors, banks, and bonding companies
- Support project managers with financial insights, cost controls, and reporting
- Develop and improve accounting processes, internal controls, and systems
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with direct experience in the construction industry
- Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP schedules, and construction financial reporting
- Experience working with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar)
- Proven leadership experience managing accounting teams
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
