Position OverviewThe Senior Staff Accountant supports the work of the V.P of Finance of Junípero Serra High School to advance the school’s Catholic mission: educating young men of faith, wisdom, service, community, and leadership. This role involves managing confidential and time-sensitive matters, including the responsible handling of school funds, while collaborating closely with colleagues and maintaining professional interactions with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the broader community.
Key Responsibilities Cash Receipts- Prepare accurate bank deposits for the general ledger
- Investigate discrepancies between bank records and deposit slips
- Reconcile monthly cash receipts with the general ledger
- Summarize weekly credit card transactions
- Record tuition-related deposits
- Reconcile tuition activity with the general ledger
- Prepare year-end tuition reconciliations
- Review and approve invoice coding and other posting details
- Assist and backup for AP
- Compile and review 1099’s for accuracy
- Collaborate with the Human Resources department to process payroll
- Review and validate employee timekeeping, compensation changes, and payroll adjustments
- Ensure proper documentation and authorization for all payroll transactions
- Support year-end payroll activities
- Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll matters in a timely and professional manner
- Reconcile and analyze accounts
- Prepare journal entries and maintain the general ledger
- Update the chart of accounts in coordination with the Archdiocese and CFO
- Ensure accurate recording of financial transactions
- Perform monthly reconciliations between development reports and the general ledger
- Collaborate with the development database manager on gift accounting
- Analyze and process quarterly development fund transactions
- Validate endowment activity and prepare fund transfers
- Prepare and submit wire transfers with the Archdiocese
- Lead year-end audit preparation
- Complete monthly closing procedures
- Assist in budget preparation
- Support policy and procedure development
- Prepare and file quarterly sales and use tax returns
- Complete California 571L property tax filings
- Perform special projects as assigned by the CFO
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Three to five years of accounting experience preferred
- Experience in nonprofit accounting preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a self-directed manner
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to build positive working relationships and collaborate effectively
- List of references or at least two letters of recommendation
