Position Summary
West Central Electric Cooperative (WCE) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Accountant to join our team. This crucial full-time position is primarily responsible for the accurate and timely execution of accounts payable, payroll, and utility billing operations.
The successful candidate will also assist with other accounting functions, financial analysis, and special projects to support the accounting team.
What You Will Do
- Payroll Processing: Administer end-to-end bi-weekly payroll, including tracking timesheets, maintaining approved pay rates, managing benefits and deductions, and executing all quarterly and year-end reporting requirements (such as Form W-2 and FUTA filings).
- Accounts Payable: Oversee the complete accounts payable cycle by processing vendor invoices and payments, coding all invoices to the proper general ledger accounts, maintaining active vendor W-9 documentation, and issuing annual Form 1099 reporting.
- Utility Billing: Process weekly electric utility billing cycles by reviewing prebill reports, processing applicable service orders, ensuring all member accounts are accurately updated for correct billing information, and answering member billing inquires.
- Operations Accounting: Serve as the primary back-up for utility plant and asset accounting, with cross-training in work order processing, capital asset management, fleet tracking, and inventory.
- Month-End Financial Close: Execute monthly financial close procedures on the final and first days of the month, including journal entry postings and reconciliations to ensure an efficient closing cycle.
- Special Projects: Perform ad-hoc financial analysis, research complex accounting issues, assist with the preparation of monthly financial reports, and complete special projects as assigned.
What We Are Looking For
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a closely related business field.
- Work Experience: Two or more years of experience in accounting or finance roles.
- Professional Certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, Cooperative Financial Professional Certificate (CFPC), or an equivalent professional credential is preferred.
- Accounting Knowledge:Solid foundational understanding of general accounting principles and accounts payable, payroll, billing and general ledger operations.
Familiarity with electric cooperative utility accounting is preferred. - Professional Skills: High ethical standards and strong integrity, paired with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proven ability to research complex issues, solve problems, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and communicate effective in both written and verbal formats. - Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, strong ten-key and typing accuracy, and a demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to specialized software.
