This Estimator role will support Ten Cate's Midwest Region, with a primary focus on heavy civil, sitework, and related construction opportunities.

Position Summary

Ten Cate is seeking an Estimator with heavy civil estimating experience to support preconstruction and estimating activities across the Midwest Region.
Heavy civil and sitework experience is important for this role. The Estimator will prepare accurate and competitive estimates for private and public projects; review project scope and requirements; coordinate subcontractor and supplier pricing; and work closely with Operations and Project Management to support successful project pursuit and execution.

The Estimator will manage assigned estimates from initial review through bid submission and handoff, working independently on routine projects and partnering with senior estimating and operations team members on larger or more complex opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare cost estimates, budgets, and bid proposals for heavy civil, sitework, and related private and public construction projects across the Midwest Region.
  • Review civil plans, specifications, bid documents, addenda, geotechnical reports, site conditions, and other project requirements to develop complete and accurate estimates.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and develop labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, production-rate, and other cost assumptions for heavy civil and sitework scopes.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and compare subcontractor and supplier quotations to support complete and competitive pricing.
  • Identify project risks, exclusions, assumptions, schedule considerations, site logistics, earthwork conditions, utilities, drainage, grading, constructability, and other factors that may affect pricing or execution.
  • Use historical cost data, production rates, market conditions, and current pricing to support competitive and financially sound bids.
  • Participate in bid strategy and estimate reviews with Operations, Project Management, and estimating leadership.
  • Support value-engineering efforts and alternative approaches that improve competitiveness while maintaining project requirements and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Project Management to align estimates with execution capabilities and support a complete handoff of awarded work.
  • Maintain organized estimating files, bid documentation, assumptions, pricing support, and related records.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support senior estimators and team members with estimating activities, research, takeoffs, pricing, and bid preparation as needed.
  • Support continuous improvement of estimating tools, templates, procedures, cost databases, and preconstruction processes.
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of construction estimating experience preferred, with hands‑on experience estimating heavy civil, sitework, or related construction projects. Experience with earthwork, grading, utilities, drainage, paving, concrete, and related civil scopes is strongly preferred.
  • Experience preparing estimates and bid proposals for heavy civil or sitework projects, including quantity takeoffs, subcontractor scopes, material pricing, labor, equipment, production rates, and project‑specific assumptions.
