About the Role
You didn't get into journalism to read press releases. You got in because you love the chase — the tip that doesn't add up, the document buried on page 47, the source who finally picks up the phone. If that sounds like you, CBS California Investigates wants to talk.
We're looking for a relentless, camera‑ready investigative reporter to join one of the most ambitious investigative units in the West. This is a high‑profile role with real resources, a collaborative team, and the reach of CBS across broadcast, streaming, digital, and podcast platforms. Your work will matter. Your stories will move people and hold power accountable.
What You'll DoYou'll own original investigations from tip to air — developing sources, back grounding people and topics with precision, working public records and data tools, and executing surveillance and hidden‑camera operations when the story demands it. You'll shoot and edit your own material, craft compelling scripts with producers and editors, and build out digital and social content that extends your stories beyond the broadcast.
You'll work a mix of fast‑turn accountability pieces and long‑game investigations, and you'll bring both with the same intensity. This isn't a desk job. You'll travel, work odd hours, and dig into topics most reporters won't touch. You'll be on TV — and you'll love it.
- 5+ years of continuous reporting experience, with a proven track record of investigative work that produced real results and real accountability
- A digger's instincts — you know how to find information fast, build a source network, and background a subject thoroughly
- On‑camera confidence and a genuine drive to develop your presence across broadcast and digital
- Hands‑on production skills — video shooting, editing, and experience with hidden cameras and surveillance operations
- Strong visual and data storytelling — you can turn a complex record into a story that lands
- Collaborative by nature, self‑directed by habit — you work well within a team but don't need to be managed
- Sharp writing — clear, accurate, and built for multiple platforms
- A valid driver’s license
- Broadcast television experience preferred, but not required
