Job Title Nights Editor, EW Job Description About The Position | Major goals and objectives and location requirements
The Night Editor will lead EW’s after-hours news operation, overseeing writers and serving as the primary editorial decision-maker during their shift. They will curate the news list, assign and edit stories, handle breaking news, and ensure the team is focused on the biggest and most important entertainment stories of the day. This person will oversee a high volume of content, prioritizing assignments based on editorial importance and audience interest.
They will assign writers to priority stories, pivot coverage as news develops, lead edits, and ensure the edit queue is cleared before the end of their shift. The Night Editor will help writers strengthen their news judgment and learn how to identify, advance, prioritize, and close out the biggest stories. They must be comfortable making independent editorial decisions during off-hours when senior leadership is unavailable and taking initiative to ensure strong coverage.
The ideal candidate will have excellent news judgment, editing and communication skills, a deep knowledge of entertainment and pop culture, and a strong understanding of the digital news landscape, including SEO, analytics, and traffic-driving opportunities.
The schedule for this role will be Monday-Thursday 2pm-10pm PT and Sunday 12pm-8pm PT
In-office Expectations:This position is fully remote with no in-office requirements, (might require coming into an office 1 or 2x a year)
About The Team | The Team and/or Brand.Entertainment Weekly is an entertainment news brand with approximately 35 full-time employees, predominantly based in New York City and Los Angeles.
About The Positions Contributions:Weight % | Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results
- 70% - Leading, editing, and assigning breaking entertainment news stories and other features; prioritizing coverage, pivoting assignments as news develops, and ensuring the edit queue is cleared before the end of the shift
- 20% - Managing and providing feedback to writers
- 10% - Reporting and writing: deliver great entertainment access stories and news; other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications and
Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent work experience
Experience:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience, with at least 2 years in an editing role
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
- Strong knowledge of entertainment, pop culture, and the EW brand
- An idea generator who can think of new, fresh story ideas
- Good time management, multitasking skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with SEO, social media, content management systems, analytics tools, Photoshop
% Travel Required (Approximate): not anticipated, but may be assigned
