The Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford

We invite applications from scholars in all areas of Buddhist Studies whose research interests would complement and augment the work of our current faculty and graduate students, and whose work promises to significantly contribute to the field of Buddhist Studies.

The Fellowship will provide a stipend, annual research fund, standard benefits, and relocation funds. The expected base pay range for this position is $77,000 – $79,000. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity. The Fellow will teach one course per year in the Department of Religious Studies at Stanford, give one talk on their research during the term of the fellowship, and actively participate in The Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford (HCBSS) events and programs.

The Fellow is expected to be in residence at Stanford for the full academic year (mid-September through mid-June), including quarters when he or she is not teaching, and to be an active member of our scholarly community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have completed their PhD no more than three years prior to the date of appointment to the fellowship.
  • A Doctorate in Arts (DA), honorary doctorate, or any other degree equivalent is not considered a qualified PhD for the purposes of application to this fellowship.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously held another post-doctoral appointment.

  • Cover letter (about one page, single-spaced) describing research and teaching interests, and detailing the reasons for the applicant’s interest in coming to The Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford
  • Contact information
  • Dissertation abstract (up to three pages, single-spaced)
  • Sample of written work (article length)
  • Two syllabi from courses you have taught. Applicants will teach through the Department of Religious Studies and should keep this in mind when proposing courses.
  • Three confidential letters of recommendation
  • Graduate transcript, with proof that the applicant has completed all the requirements for the PhD or a letter from their PhD advisor stating that they will have the PhD conferred by July 1, 2026
