A specialist serves as the Public Agency Representative in special education case conferences. They provide support to special education teachers, general education teachers, school administrators, support staff and parents to design individual education plans for students.
Responsibilities- Train teachers and support staff on goal writing, instructional design, and special education law
- Review case conference paperwork for thoroughness and compliance according to federal and state special education laws
- Strengths in IEP writing, curriculum knowledge, communication skills, special education law, building relationships with school staff, parents, and leadership
- Ensure paperwork and follow-up tasks, such as special transportation, assistive technology evaluations, and alternative placements, are done
- Keep informed of current practices in education by attending educational conferences, participating in appropriate professional organizations and meetings, reviewing research findings, professional journals, and by other appropriate means.
- Consult with building level administration, teachers, and special education team on issues concerning special education
- Conduct building level meetings with special education teams for the discussion of matters concerning improvement of local special education programs.
- Promote and encourage positive involvement of parents in the special education process
- Chair all initial case conferences, re-evaluations, move-in conferences, and annual case reviews
