POSITION SUMMARY:
The purpose of this position is to (1) determine students’ eligibility for special education services by assessing their cognitive ability, processing strengths and weaknesses, adaptive behavior, social/emotional/behavioral functioning and academic achievement, and (2) to assist in the development of a specific educational program for the student.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Participates as a team member in the multidisciplinary evaluation process.
- Prior to a referral for an evaluation, consults with school staff requiring academic/behavioral interventions and appropriateness of referral.
- Administers diagnostic tests and procedures to determine students’ cognitive ability, processing strengths and weaknesses, adaptive behavior development, academic achievement levels and emotional/behavioral functioning.
- Schedules pre‑evaluation, post‑evaluation and re‑evaluation conferences in collaboration with parents, school staff and evaluation team.
- Attends pre‑evaluation conferences with parents and school officials to obtain pertinent background information, review school concerns, explain parental rights and responsibilities and secure permission to evaluate.
- Reviews student files, referral packets and gathers pertinent data from physicians, mental health professionals and outside agencies.
- Attends diagnostic conferences and reports assessment results and recommendations to parents, students, teachers, counselors and other interested and/or entitled parties.
- Serves as chairperson at diagnostic conferences and is responsible for ensuring that diagnostic decisions are made in compliance with DESE criteria and best professional practice.
- Maintains case records by preparing, editing, and proofing the final assessment report in a timely manner.
- Attends professional development opportunities, staff meetings and credit courses (when necessary) in order to keep abreast of new developments and maintain certification and/or licensure.
- Serves on committees making recommendations to coordinators and directors.
- Attends IEP conferences, when necessary, to provide input on appropriate goals and objectives for individual students.
- Consults with colleagues, supervisors and consultants regarding the special education needs of individual students.
- At the request of coordinators, provides in‑service to observers, parent groups and students regarding assessment and related services.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by the superintendent, assistant superintendents, directors, or coordinators.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Requires travel to work sites within the district.
- Required movement about and within a department.
- Read and interpret correspondence, reports, legal documents, etc. for administrative purposes.
- Administers tests and diagnostic procedures.
- Prepares and maintains written reports.
- Discusses individual student program with teachers, principals, and parents.
- Reports testing information at meetings.
- Observes and evaluates student performance.
- Prepares and proof reads test reports.
- Exerts 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
- Exerts 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or
- Exerts greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly.
- Master’s in psychology or related field.
- Certification as school psychologist or psychological examiner.
- Standard office equipment.
- On two or three person teams, some of the aforementioned tasks may be the responsibility of other personnel or may be shared by the psychological examiner and others.
- Ability to work in a variety of locations, travel throughout the District, work non‑traditional hours which may include evenings and weekends and meet the physical demands of handling a variety of student needs.
- While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, walk, stand and reach.
