The School of Applied Health at Cal Poly Humboldt offers a different kind of innovative learning. We put student’s knowledge in motion through hands‑on experiences. We offer bachelor degree programs in Kinesiology, Recreation Administration and Nursing, a master’s in Kinesiology, a variety of minors and certificates (including scientific diving), and an adapted physical education curriculum to prepare physical education teachers to work with children and youth with disabilities.

Qualifications for Health Education CoursesRequired: MS/MA in Health, Kinesiology, Health Education, Nutrition or related field plus successful teaching experience in health education and academic or professional work related to health promotion.
Preferred:
- Relevance of training or experience to the specific course
- Coursework towards a PhD in Kinesiology, Health Education, Nutrition or a related field
- Applicable certification including CHES or registered dietitian license
- Successful university teaching experience
Required: First Aid/CPR instructor certificate, BA/BS in an appropriate field, and successful teaching experience in First Aid/CPR.
Qualifications for Kinesiology CoursesRequired: MS/MA in PE, Kinesiology or related field plus mastery of the subject and successful teaching experience.
Some courses require an Athletic Training Certificate.
Preferred:
- PhD in Kinesiology or related field, or significant progress toward a PhD in Kinesiology
- Relevance of training or experience to teaching the specific course
- Elementary P.E. teaching experience or teaching certificate in Physical Education
- Minimum of one to three years of successful university teaching experience
- For limited courses, a BS/BA in PE, Kinesiology or related field and successful teaching in the content area may be accepted
Required: MS or MA in Recreation, Leisure Studies or closely related field and at least one year of successful college or university teaching experience in the specific subject area.
For Outdoor Recreation courses, current and recognized Wilderness First Responder and CPR/First Aid certifications are required, with 30 or more days of documented lead instructor/facilitator experience. Leave No Trace trainer or higher is preferred.
Preferred (advanced qualifications):
- PhD, EdD, or significant progression toward a terminal degree (ABD) in Recreation, Leisure Studies or a closely related field
- Successful university or college teaching experience in recreation‑management courses (programming, legal issues, facility planning, financial management, supervision)
- Experience in developing and implementing experiential education and service‑leaning courses
- Professional experience in related areas
Instructor must have a degree in a disability‑related field (therapeutic recreation, special education, disabilities studies) and demonstrated evidence of leadership of recreation programs aimed at including individuals with disabilities.
REC 315, 335, 435 (Travel Industry, Tourism Planning & Development, Sustainable Tourism)Instructor must have an advanced degree in tourism‑related field.
REC 345 Environmental EducationInstructor must have the ability to provide certification in Project Wet or Project Wild curriculum.
REC 410 Community RecreationInstructor must have experience working in community‑based recreation programs, including collaborating across programs, departments, and agencies.
