JOB DESCRIPTION

PARAPROFESSIONAL- SPECIAL EDUCATION SY 2026-27

Elementary position

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education level:
    Successful completion of Para Pro examination, 20 hr training for substitute certificate or a minimum of 60 college hours. If you have sub training or 60 hours sub certificate is required.
  • Experience Desired:
    Training and/ or experience related to the specific responsibilities and competencies of the paraprofessional role are beneficial.
  • Other requirements:
    Must successfully pass a background check that is satisfactory to the Board of Education.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: School in-session days plus four days; compensation per salary schedule, pay is annualized over 12 months. Board paid benefits.

REPORT TO: Building Principal in collaboration with Director of Special Services with direct supervision provided by special education teacher(s).

JOB GOAL: To serve as support staff when required to implement special education or related services for a class and/or to provide direct assistance to students with disabilities. The paraprofessional will possess good people skills, flexibility, the ability to work under pressure and stay on task, responsibility, reliability, be a self-starter, and the ability to adjust well to change.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must work under the direct supervision of a Special Education teacher when providing instructional services.
  • Assist students to complete instructional activities.
  • Assist in the supervision of students, as required, to ensure students' individual needs are met in relation to the student’s IEP goals, objectives, accommodations, and/or modifications.
  • Provide physical assistance based on student needs such as lifting, transferring, moving from class to class, feeding, toileting, and physical intervention.
  • Participate in training activities as required by the District in order to maintain professional knowledge related to the position.
  • Carry out work responsibilities effectively under the pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions, and new or emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate respect for students, staff, and parents in all situations.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the principal or supervising teacher, which are related to facilitating success (i.e., instructional, social, behavioral) for students with disabilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job, the employees may frequently lift and/or move at least 50 pounds of materials, or lift children from wheelchairs, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as reading handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

EVALUATION: Evaluation by the director of special services in cooperation with the supervising teacher.
