Student Assistant: EXCELerator Peer Tutor

Founded in 1986, St. Charles Community College (SCC) has a reputation as one of the best two-year colleges in Missouri. SCC's service area includes a six-county region with a population exceeding 540,000. SCC's main campus, located in Cottleville, has won architectural awards for its innovative, contemporary design. Tutors will assist students enrolled in SCC courses one‑on‑one and in group settings. The peer tutor can assist with any assignments from the previously studied curriculum. Other duties may include helping students with study skills, technology, and time management. Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Time management is required for on‑time appointments and maintaining a work schedule.
There will be mandatory orientation and training sessions.
Student applicants must be current SCC students enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours. Students must have a written recommendation from a Department Chair or faculty member for each subject they will tutor. Students must have successfully completed required courses in at least one of the following subject areas:
- Biology
- Business Technology
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- English/Writing
- Mathematics
- Physics
Students can tutor only in subjects in which they have taken courses specific subjects, students can only tutor courses at a level from which they have already surpassed. For example, a student who has taken English composition I (ENG‑101) and not English composition II (ENG‑102) cannot tutor a student currently taking ENG‑102. Additionally, subject‑specific requirements are described below:
Students Interested in Tutoring BiologyThe Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student up through general Biology: cells to organisms; those who can help students with general Biology: organisms to environment, microbiology, human anatomy, and/or human physiology are preferred.
Peer Tutors in Biology must have taken general biology: cells to organisms (BIO‑150) or higher‑level Biology at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.
Students Interested in Tutoring Business TechnologyThe Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student up through microcomputer applications; those who can help students with word processing and database applications are preferred.
Peer Tutors in Business Technology must have taken microcomputer applications (BTC‑103) or higher‑level Business Technology at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.
Students Interested in Tutoring ChemistryThe Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student with general chemistry I; those who can also help with general chemistry II, organic chemistry I & II, and/or quantitative analysis are preferred.
Peer Tutors in Chemistry must have taken general chemistry I (CHM‑115) or higher‑level chemistry at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.
Students Interested in Tutoring Computer ScienceThe Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student through programming fundamentals with Python. Those who can help students with SQL programming, microcomputer applications, C++ programming, and/or C# programming are preferred.
Students Interested in Tutoring English/WritingThe Peer Tutor should be able to assist any student in English Composition II; those who can help with technical writing and/or creative writing are preferred.
Peer Tutors in English/Writing must have taken English Composition II (ENG‑102) or higher‑level English/Writing at SCC and received a grade of "B" or better.
