Student Assistant: EXCELerator Peer Tutor

Founded in 1986, St. Charles Community College (SCC) has a reputation as one of the best two-year colleges in Missouri. Tutors will assist students enrolled in SCC courses one-on-one and in group settings. The peer tutor can assist with any assignments from the previously studied curriculum. Other duties may include helping students with study skills, technology, and time management. Tutors must be able to work independently and as a team member. Time management is required for on‑time appointments and maintaining a work schedule.

There will be mandatory orientation and training sessions.

Student applicants must be current SCC students enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours. Students must have a written recommendation from a Department Chair or faculty member for each subject they will tutor. Students must have successfully completed required courses in at least one of the following subject areas:

• Biology
• Business Technology
• Chemistry
• Computer Science
• English/Writing
• Mathematics
• Physics

• Biology – The tutor should be able to assist any student up through general Biology: cells to organisms; preferred assistance with organism to environment, microbiology, human anatomy, and/or human physiology. Must have taken general biology: cells to organisms (BIO‑150) or higher-level biology at SCC and received a grade of “B” or better.
• Business Technology – The tutor should be able to assist any student up through microcomputer applications; preferred assistance with word processing and database applications. Must have taken microcomputer applications (BTC‑103) or higher-level business technology at SCC and received a grade of “B” or better.
• Chemistry – The tutor should be able to assist any student with general chemistry I; preferred assistance with general chemistry II, organic chemistry I & II, and/or quantitative analysis. Must have taken general chemistry I (CHM‑115) or higher-level chemistry at SCC and received a grade of “B” or better.
• Computer Science – The tutor should be able to assist any student through programming fundamentals with Python. Prefer assistance with SQL programming, microcomputer applications, C++ programming, and/or C# programming. Must have taken programming fundamentals with Python (CPT‑135) or higher-level computer science at SCC and received a grade of “B” or better.
• English/Writing – The tutor should be able to assist any student in English Composition II; preferred assistance with technical writing and/or creative writing. Must have taken English Composition II (ENG‑102) or higher-level English/Writing at SCC and received a grade of “B” or better.
• Mathematics – The tutor should be able to assist any student up through college algebra; preferred assistance with trigonometry, calculus, and/or statistics. Must have taken college algebra (MAT‑158) or higher-level mathematics at SCC and received a grade of “B” or better.
• Physics – The tutor should be able to assist any student up through general physics I; preferred assistance with general physics II and/or engineering physics I & II. Must have taken general physics I (PHY‑150) or higher-level physics at SCC and received a grade of “B” or better.

Work hours must not conflict with students’ academic schedules. Weekday availability is required, with hours from morning through evening. Schedule is flexible and subject to availability, averaging 10–15 hours per week. Tutors will have a set schedule for the semester in the EXCELerator, but may be asked to work in support of additional EXCELerator events, as the student's schedule allows, so long as it does not conflict with the student's schedule.

Positions are offered on a term‑by‑term basis aligned with academic semesters, with the possibility of renewal. Openings are available in spring, summer, and fall semesters.
