Purpose Statement

The job of Paraprofessional - Registered Behavioral Technician is centered on assisting in the instruction of individual or small groups of students in various subject areas; assisting in the implementation of a behavior modification program; monitoring and reporting student behavior and performance; and performing a variety of clerical duties as assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Assists with individualized assessment procedures (e.g., curriculum-based, developmental, social skills, functional) for the purpose of assessing academic, socio-emotional, and behavioral challenges.
  • Collects data (continuous and discontinuous) to provide an accurate picture of behavior.
  • Communicates with stakeholders (e.g., teachers, parents, caregivers, other school and outside agency personnel) to convey and receive information required to perform job functions.
  • Documents observations of student performance in academic and school activities to provide written records and comply with mandated requirements.
  • Guides students in personal interactions and specific issues to develop interpersonal skills and problem‑solving strategies, building confidence and self‑esteem.
  • Implements procedures based on the skill acquisition plan (e.g., discrete‑trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, task‑analyzed chaining, discrimination training, stimulus‑control transfer, prompt and prompt‑fading, shaping, token economy, extinction) to meet plan goals and objectives.
  • Maintains manual and electronic instructional files and records (e.g., session notes, procedure implementation, observations, assessments, data collection) for written reference and mandated requirements.
  • Manages assigned projects and activities (e.g., reports, goals, trainings, assessments, implementation procedures) to meet timelines and objectives.
  • Monitors students' behavior plans and performance, under the direction of a teacher or certified analyst, to provide feedback to students, teachers, and others involved in service provision in accordance with IEPs.
  • Participates in meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey information relevant to job functions.
  • Prepares a variety of written and electronic documents and materials (e.g., correspondence, program descriptions, parent notices, logs) to document activities, provide written reference, and convey information.
  • Trains teachers in procedures and protocols to ensure fidelity in implementation.

Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of instructional support.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge required to perform basic math, read manuals, write documents, present information, and analyze situations. Specific competencies include child guidance principles for students with learning disabilities; basic subjects taught in District schools; instructional materials and techniques for Special Education; safe classroom practices; correct English usage; reading and writing skills; record‑keeping; and modern office procedures.

Skills required include handling hazardous materials, operating standard office equipment and software, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Abilities include scheduling activities, gathering and collating data, using job‑related equipment, working with diverse groups, problem‑solving, interpreting guidelines, supervising and disciplining students, modeling appropriate social skills, applying behavior modification techniques, writing observations, intervening positively, printing and writing legibly, making arithmetic calculations quickly, following directions, communicating effectively, keeping confidential, and understanding the needs of special education students.

Responsibilities

Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; lead, guide, and coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; and utilize resources from other work units as needed.
