To develop in each pupil appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal and/or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening and reading music; to meet goals established in District's "Purposes of Instruction," Course of Study and Curriculum Guide in relation to specific needs of all students under his/her direction.
PerformanceResponsibilities
- In cooperation with Coordinator
- Visual and Performing Arts and other staff, plan instructional objectives for assigned grade level or subject area consistent with Course of Study and Curriculum Guide; objectives to be established by October 15 each year. - Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity and interest; participate with staff in establishing and maintaining effective learning climate; develop reasonable and specific rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in classroom fairly and justly.
- Analyze learning capacity of students and provide for their needs; plan balanced music program and organize class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within allotted time.
- Guide learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear performance objectives as listed in Course of Study and Curriculum Guide for instrumental music for all lessons, projects, and the like; communicate these objectives to students.
- Instruct pupils in citizenship specified by state law and administrative regulations and procedures of school district.
- Make referral to principal on pupils who demonstrate severe unsocial behavior patterns.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to provide orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals and musical performances.
- Keep weekly records and evaluate each pupil's musical growth (practice slips) and performance; assess each individual's contribution to group performance; confer with colleagues, students, and parents regarding pupil progress; assign citizenship and scholarship marks.
- Maintain positive relationship with all staff and parents through events, open house, classroom visitations, conferences, written communication, and work samples, so parents and staff are aware of students' progress and adjustment.
- Cooperate with school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, PTA, district festival concert and civic functions.
- Plan, rehearse and direct pupils in musical programs for school and community; apply knowledge of district procedures and limitations set on performance.
- Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt curriculum tones of each pupil.
- Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, appropriate for ages and skill levels of pupils.
- Control storage and use of school‑owned property; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required; have pianos tuned at least once a year.
- Select and requisition books, sheet music, musical instruments and instructional aids and supplies; maintain accurate inventory records.
- Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff to assess and help pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems; make referrals as required.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations, including lesson schedule, attendance reports, reports to parents and annual report.
