Position Overview
The University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is seeking a Cooperative Extension 4‑H Youth Development Advisor to serve San Diego and Imperial Counties. The Advisor will develop, deliver, and evaluate programs that provide youth with meaningful personal development opportunities, with a focus on science, technology, engineering, agriculture, and mathematics (STEAM). The role involves applied research, outreach, and collaboration with county and community partners to strengthen youth access and engagement in STEAM education.
LocationUCCE San Diego County Office 9335 Hazard Way, Suite 201, San Diego, CA 92123. The Advisor will work onsite at this headquarters and travel to Imperial County as required.
Position DetailsThe Advisor will design and implement an innovative extension education and applied research program focused on youth participation in STEAM.
Key responsibilities include:
- Identify and implement program strategies and community-based approaches that strengthen STEAM-related skills and opportunities for youth.
- Develop and deliver workshops in STEAM subject areas to build skills among youth, adult volunteers, and professionals working with youth.
- Conduct applied research related to STEAM, in cooperation with State 4‑H staff, county 4‑H Advisors, and community partners.
- Develop and evaluate youth development programs that support STEAM engagement in both school-based and out-of-school-time settings.
- Apply and assess the quality of youth development within STEAM programming.
- Establish partnerships with stakeholders such as school districts, youth centers, nonprofits, county agencies, Farm Bureau, local fairs, and higher‑education institutions to enhance program visibility and impact.
The Advisor reports to the UCCE Area Director for San Diego and Imperial Counties and is programmatically supported by the 4‑H Statewide Director. This is an onsite position requiring regular office presence and fieldwork across the two counties.
Education and Key Qualifications- Minimum Master’s degree in youth development, education, STEAM-related disciplines, or a related field.
- Experience in conducting applied research, program evaluation, and education programs with youth.
- Ability to create partnerships with local agencies (e.g., school districts).
- Record of research or outreach publications.
- Leadership skills and experience in program and personnel management.
- Flexible travel schedule and valid California driver’s license; liability and property‑damage insurance required.
- Background investigation required, including fingerprinting and required federal and state clearances.
- Experience working with diverse youth populations.
- Spanish language proficiency.
- Ability to secure and manage extramural funding.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and lifelong‑learning skills.
- Sensitivity to cultural differences and ability to work with varied socioeconomic and ethnic groups.
Salary:
Assistant Rank, Step I ( 85,600) to Step VI ( 108,600). Step placement based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include 2 days of paid vacation per month, 1 day of paid sick leave per month, paid holidays, and eligibility for sabbatical leave. The position is eligible for indefinite status following successful reviews.
