Special Services Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in regular and/or special education. Master’s Degree in education with certification in at least one area of special education by the State Board of Education. Relevant coursework related to evaluation and assessment, parent conferencing and special education process. Prefer:
School Psychological Examiner certification by the State Board of Education.

JOB GOAL:

A professional who assumes responsibility for the direction, coordination and supervision of the special education process in assigned buildings from screen through identification and placement to ensure (1) appropriate identification and placement of students with disabilities; and (2) district compliance with state and federal requirements for the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Implements procedures for referral, securing medical reports, psychological examinations and placement.
  • Coordinates the review of necessary action for transfer students.
  • Coordinates evaluation plans and assists with individual testing.
  • Implements procedures for evaluation, placement and reevaluation of students with regard to Special Education services program.
  • Coordinates staffings and evaluations.
  • Prepares multidisciplinary diagnostic summaries and disseminates diagnostic summaries.
  • Assists with the maintenance of individual records of all students receiving special services.
  • Coordinates and/or attends parent conferences to obtain or share necessary evaluation data.
  • Completes State School evaluations and diagnostic summaries.
  • Attends State School IEP conferences.
  • Completes outside/contractual/private and parochial evaluations, diagnostic summaries and IEP conferences.
  • Responsible for ordering, inventory and distribution of special education tests/test protocols.
  • Assists with provision of orientation and inservice training related to the Special Education process.
  • Keeps informed of legal requirements governing Special Education.
  • Serves as a resource for special needs issues on a building level.
  • Serves as a local education agency (LEA) representative designated by the Board of Education.
  • Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent or designee.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    An individual who holds this position is frequently required to move in and around buildings and grounds to visit classrooms, attend meetings, sit for up to an hour at a time and supervise bus loading and unloading areas. They also must be able to hear a conversation in a noisy environment.

    ATTENDANCE:

    Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

    CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

    The work environment is consistent with a typical office environment; however, the individual who holds this position may be required to be outside in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees.
