Hours:

6.5 per day, 178 days per year. 7 hours per day for 4 days first year, 2 days after until certification.

Pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $25.40

Important Information

Official Hire Date based on School Board approval; may change.

Required Training:
Right Response Training within 3-5 months. Must complete Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Para educator Certificate per State. Para educator Certificate Program depends on State funding.

Federal Minimum Employment Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and one of:
    • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment.
    • AA degree or higher.
    • Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits.
    • Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries.
    • Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.
General Summary

Assist certificated staff with instructional and non‑instructional activities for students with disabilities in an integrated Kindergarten classroom, including individual or small‑group instruction, basic life skills, and behavior supervision.

Essential Functions
  • Instruct students with a range of disabilities individually or in small groups, promote understanding, provide encouragement, and assist with objective tests.
  • Communicate with certificated staff about individual student progress; adjust methods and consult for remediation/enrichment.
  • Assist in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments for assessment.
  • Attend to student physical and safety needs, monitor medical risks, correct behaviors, maintain discipline per policy.
  • Assist students with toileting, catheterization, diapering, hygiene, showering.
  • Assist with interpersonal and personal skills, feeding, social aspects of eating.
  • Assist with basic living skills and pre‑vocational activities, facilitate communication skills and integration with peers.
  • Establish and maintain communication with students, staff, parents for progress, safety, and community relations.
  • Provide physical assistance to students, use adaptive equipment, document procedures from physical therapist.
  • Monitor need for first aid and refer for treatment as appropriate.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of classroom, handle equipment, wash dishes, clean surfaces, manage supplies.
  • Alert qualified district staff to student problems.
  • Locate, prepare, modify materials for student use, enrichment activities, and special projects under direction of certificated staff.
  • Prepare, duplicate, collate, distribute materials; operate office equipment.
  • Maintain physical appearance of classroom and stored equipment; manage supplies.
  • Serve on district committees and work teams; model cooperative behavior and confidentiality.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
  • Reporting Relationships

    Reports to school principal or assigned administrator; receives guidance from certificated staff.

    Mental Demands

    Frequent interruptions, deal with wide range of student behaviors, academic abilities, and physical or emotional disabilities.

    Physical Demands

    Exposure to infectious diseases, noise, lifting and positioning students and equipment up to 10 pounds, extended periods in non‑routine positions, potential exposure to biting and bodily fluids, outdoor work in inclement weather.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience: Experience working with school‑age children and special needs students preferred.

    Licenses/Special Requirements: Fingerprinting and background check. Adhere to infection control plan. May need first aid and CPR certification. Hepatitis‑B immunization offered. Complete Right Response Training and renew annually. Complete Fundamental Course and Para educator Certificate Program.
