Job Goal:
Provide exceptional instruction to assigned students while working within the district's established policies and procedures.

Classification:
Exempt

Position Summary: Create a flexible program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establish effective rapport with pupils; motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for education following each pupil's ability; and establish good relationships with parents, staff members, and maintain a smooth relationship between the Native American community and the School District.

Job Specifications: An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skill, and/or ability.

  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and essential subject matter specified in the school district's state law, administrative regulations, and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Treat pupils with respect and dignity.
  • Evaluate pupils' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupils' progress and interpret the school program.
  • Interact positively and professionally with pupils, staff, and parents.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Establish rapport with pupils and provide a pleasant, safe, and orderly climate conducive to learning.
  • Maintain professional competence through in‑service education activities provided by the district and self‑selected professional growth activities.
  • Supervise and monitor students during out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned working day (Indian Education field trips).
  • American Indian College and Career Readiness teacher/advisor.
  • Meet with AISA Club for MS one time per week.
  • Optional additional duties with stipend (Powwows, evening cultural activities, and fundraisers).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Native American Preference must be exercised. Public Law 93‑638, The Indian Self Determination and Education Act of 1975, now directs “Indian Preference to be used in hiring for all Title VI and Johnson O’Malley vacancies.”
  • Knowledge of Native American history and culture.
  • Must possess a bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
  • American Indian Studies certification or coursework.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others, demonstrate self‑discipline and initiative, and follow state and district guidelines.

Regular Requirements: Stand for extended periods; walk; twist at the neck and trunk; bend and reach with hands and arms overhead, above the shoulder, and horizontally; repetitive use of fingers and hands to grasp and/or operate equipment and demonstrate lessons to students.

Occasional Requirements: Lift/move up to 25 pounds; ability to administer CPR.

Visual Requirements: Close, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Hearing/Speaking Requirements: Adequate to exchange information.
