Teacher Assistant

Support the education, supervision, and care of children in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment. The Teacher Assistant assists the Teacher with classroom instruction, daily activities, and the overall well‑being of children while ensuring adequate supervision at all times.

Responsibilities and Authority
  • Assist the Teacher with classroom instruction and daily activities by preparing materials, supervising play, serving meals, supporting nap routines, and performing other assigned duties.
  • Support a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment that promotes children's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
  • Provide continuous supervision to ensure the health, safety, and well‑being of all children.
  • Assist with implementing lesson plans, educational activities, and age‑appropriate experiences, including art, music, games, and creative play.
  • Assist with daily attendance, classroom documentation, and observations of children's developmental progress.
  • Support children during snack and meal times while encouraging healthy eating habits and positive social interaction.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and developmentally appropriate classroom and outdoor learning environment.
  • Collaborate with the Teacher in preparing lesson plans, classroom materials, and educational equipment.
  • Build positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers while promoting an inclusive and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Supervise the classroom when the Teacher is temporarily away.
  • Attend required staff meetings, workshops, trainings, conferences, and parent meetings.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and comply with MAOF dress code requirements, including wearing the assigned uniform or apron.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the successful implementation of the MAOF Child Care and Development Program.
Requirements
  • Minimum of six (6) semester units in Early Childhood Education and/or Child Development.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with preschool‑aged children preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude and commitment to supporting the growth and development of young children.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and families from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must successfully complete California AB 1207 Mandated Reporter Training within 90 days of hire and renew every two (2) years.
  • Must successfully complete all pre‑employment health requirements, including a physical examination, Tuberculosis (TB) clearance, required immunizations (influenza, pertussis, and measles), and criminal background clearances through the FBI, DOJ, and CACI prior to employment.
  • Must maintain Live Scan fingerprint clearance throughout employment.
  • Regular attendance is required in accordance with the assigned work schedule based on program operational needs.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, sit on the floor, reach, lift, carry, and actively supervise young children. The employee must frequently use hands to handle classroom materials and communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, or assist children and classroom materials weighing up to 20 pounds.

Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment is primarily located within an early childhood education setting and may include classrooms, outdoor play areas, kitchens, and administrative offices. Employees may be exposed to varying noise levels, cleaning products, infectious illnesses common to child care settings, and changing weather conditions while supervising outdoor activities.
