Hiring Ranges:
Associate Teachers Permit + BA degree: $24.52 - $29.09/hr DOE;
Associate Teachers Permit + AA degree: $22.12 - $26.68/hr DOE;
Associate Teachers Permit + HS diploma: $20.50 - $24.28/hr DOE.

Overview of Position

Under general supervision, the assistant teacher plans, implements, and evaluates a developmentally appropriate and inclusive educational curriculum for children in the Early Head Start/Head Start program.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as an educator for assigned children in the classroom throughout the child’s enrollment in the program.
  • Support personalised care of children, including safety and visual supervision.
  • Implement and supervise an inclusive curriculum in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, ESSC standards, and mandated requirements.
  • Conduct home visits and parent conferences within required timelines.
  • Assist in developing individual child goals with parent input.
  • Maintain weekly lesson plans, progress and anecdotal notes, and current paperwork.
  • Complete child screenings and assessments within required time‑frames.
  • Coordinate and conduct bi‑monthly classroom unit meetings.
  • Provide input to evaluate volunteers and college interns.
  • Participate in staff meetings, parent meetings, and in‑service training.
  • Plan and facilitate associate and parent training activities, parent meetings and workshops.
  • Coordinate parent education, training and support for pregnant women, including prenatal education, breastfeeding information, and other health resources.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements

A.A. Degree in early childhood education, child development, and/or related field. Must possess and maintain a Child Development Associate (CDA) Teacher Permit, pediatric CPR and First Aid certificate, and a Food Handler certificate.

Experience Requirements

Experience teaching in a preschool or infant/toddler classroom setting, including 175 days of 3+ hours per day within a four‑year period, and training and experience necessary to develop consistent, stable, and supportive relationships with very young children.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of infant and toddler development, safety issues, mandatory child abuse reporter and mandatory pesticide safety training.
Proficiency with MS Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Skype).
Ability to interpret and implement regulations of the California Department of Education, Title 5 funding terms, Title 22 Community Care Licensing, Head Start Performance Standards, and Easterseals policies.
Effective oral and written communication, teamwork skills, and positive influence on children and families.
Sound judgment, planning, and time‑management skills.
Ability to pass a post‑offer physical examination, TB test, and provide required immunizations.
Ability to obtain and maintain a criminal record and sex‑offender index clearance.

Physical Demands

Occasional lifting of 0–30 lbs.; standing up to 3 hours per day; sitting up to 8 hours per day; walking up to 3 hours per day; repetitive keyboard activity and telephone use.

Notable Exposures

No exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
