Part-Time Faculty at the University hold fractional appointments and carry a defined scope of faculty responsibilities of teaching, service, and scholarship proportional to their appointment fraction (FTE), as defined in the Faculty Handbook and set forth in the individual Faculty Workload Assignment. Faculty Members deliver high-quality instruction within assigned programs in alignment with approved syllabi, program learning outcomes, and the University's academic standards.
Scholarship and service obligations, where assigned, are pro-rated to the fractional load and specified in the Faculty Workload Assignment. Specific rank, credential requirements, workload parameters, and course assignments are defined by the Program Director and/or Dean through the Faculty Workload Assignment process and may vary by discipline, rank, and delivery format. Faculty Members are subject to the Faculty Handbook and Employment Handbook.
EssentialJob Functions
1. Teaching and Instruction
- Faculty are responsible for delivering course content in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the institution. Courses shall be in alignment with the Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs), Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), and Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs).
- Faculty are required to hold office hours at a time convenient for student participation and in accordance with the expectations outlined in the Faculty Handbook (Section: Determination of Faculty Workload – Office Hours).
- Create and administer assessments aligned with the approved course syllabus, and grade student work within the timelines and quality standards established for the program.
- Provide specific, criterion-referenced, and developmental feedback that reflects the rigor of each assignment by applying rubrics consistently and transparently.
- Maintain accurate and current course records and grades in the University's learning management system in accordance with University policy.
- Submit required course materials, including syllabi and/or course shells, by the deadlines established in the Online Faculty Expectations (if applicable) and program calendar.
- Demonstrate consistent, meaningful engagement with individual students, and foster a respectful, inclusive, and professional academic environment.
- Monitor student progress and at-risk indicators within assigned courses and refer students experiencing academic difficulty or distress to the appropriate program leadership or institutional resource in a timely manner.
- Notify program leadership in advance of any planned absence during an active course period and coordinate coverage as needed.
- Engage in scholarly activity only to the extent assigned in the Faculty Workload Assignment; scholarship obligations are pro-rated to the fractional appointment and may be limited or waived depending on the appointment fraction.
- Maintain currency in the field through ongoing professional development, which may include participation in discipline-specific organizations, continuing education, and emerging pedagogical practices.
- Participate in required faculty development activities as directed, including instructional-technology training, course-quality workshops, and accreditation-related development.
- Where assigned, participate in program, college, and university governance through committee service, faculty meetings, and shared governance structures, proportional to the fractional load and as defined in the Faculty Handbook and Faculty Workload Assignment.
- Contribute to program development, curriculum review, accreditation activities, and continuous improvement initiatives as directed by the Program Director and/or Dean.
- Engage in stewardship activities such as student advising, mentoring, and program promotion as assigned.
- Serve on search, assessment, and other committees as requested and consistent with the fractional appointment.
- Uphold and enforce the University's Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Policy and report suspected violations in accordance with institutional procedures outlined in the Faculty Code of Professional Ethics section of the Faculty Handbook.
- Comply with applicable accreditation and regulatory standards governing course delivery and student accommodation.
- Maintain current licensure, certification, and/or professional credentials required by the assigned program and discipline throughout the appointment.
- Adhere to the Faculty Handbook and Employment Handbook and treat all members of the University community with respect in accordance with established University values.
